Safety first

This support page cannot help with an active emergency. Contact the local emergency service or use an available emergency communication method. Offline First Aid does not diagnose, replace emergency services, or replace qualified medical care.

The current app is a prototype. Its first-aid pathways are deterministic and source-linked, but the medical content has not completed clinical review for public release. Do not use it as your only first-aid resource or emergency plan.

In the app, Emergency action needed and Urgent assessment recommended are escalation labels. Use reachable professional help for serious, worsening, or uncertain conditions. The app cannot call for help, provide navigation, or send a satellite message for you.

Prepare a trip

Open the Prepare tab. If you already have a trip, choose it under Upcoming trips; otherwise tap Add a trip.

  1. 1

Under Tell us about your trip, enter the destination, dates, activities, and useful route details, then tap Continue.

  2. 2

Answer any follow-up question. Use Add trip details or Change trip details to correct what the app understood.

  3. 3

Review Recommended Offline Setup, Check your kit, navigation, communication, and optional voice setup. A kit item counts as available only when you confirm it.

  4. 4

Tap Prepare this trip offline. Keep the app open until the preparation tasks finish, then review anything marked Needs attention.

Before leaving coverage, open the saved trip once and test the exact resources you expect in Airplane Mode. Keep a separate offline map and emergency-communication plan; Offline First Aid does not verify another app's map download or a satellite communicator.

Understand offline readiness

  • Trip safety saved offlineCurrent first-aid content and the supported trip-specific bundle are saved on this iPhone.
  • First aid is ready offlineCore first-aid pathways are available, but trip-specific safety is not fully ready.
  • Offline setup needs attentionA required item is missing, incomplete, expired, or needs to be prepared again.
  • Needs attentionOpen the trip to see the unresolved source, route, readiness, or preparation item.
  • Voice unavailable offlineText and touch still work. Download the optional voice assets before relying on spoken interaction.

Offline details shows the saved state of the app's first-aid and trip packs. Saved Offline lists locally installed content and source freshness. Use Update saved safety while connected after changing trip details or when content needs a refresh.

Use Help in the field

Open Help. Under What happened?, type a description and tap Get guidance, or use Start voice input. For direct entry, Quick help includes Bleeding, Choking, Allergic, and More.

  • Answer structured questions with Yes, No, or Not sure. Do not guess just to move forward.
  • Use Show me for an available step-by-step aid and Sources to inspect the protocol provenance shown by the app.
  • Use Ask about this step for a bounded clarification, Update what's happening when the situation changes, or Start over for a new incident.
  • Saved-trip questions use the active trip's stored resources. The app must not invent current conditions, supplies, or professional access.

The Apple model helps interpret your words. Deterministic app code selects medical questions, actions, warnings, and escalation guidance. If interpretation fails, choose a first-aid topic manually.

What works offline—and what does not

Available without a connection

  • Manual first-aid topics and Quick help.
  • Prepared trip resources already saved on this iPhone.
  • Deterministic first-aid questions and guidance.
  • On-device incident interpretation and conversation when Apple's model is available.

Needs setup or a connection

  • Apple model and speech-asset downloads before field use.
  • Preparing or updating saved trip safety.
  • The optional NOAA Lost Coast tide lookup.
  • Web links, live conditions, navigation, and emergency communication.

The current build has no active cloud conversation provider. If the banner says Offline conversation model unavailable, manual first-aid topics, Quick help, and saved trip resources still work. Device, language, Apple Intelligence settings, and downloaded system assets affect conversational availability.

Voice input and Hands-Free

Voice uses Apple's on-device speech frameworks. For short voice input, tap the microphone, speak, then tap Stop voice input. Review the transcript before submitting it.

Hands-Free is a turn-by-turn mode: Tap to speak, speak, choose Done speaking, wait while the app works and speaks, then tap again. Repeat, Type, and Stop remain available. It is not continuously listening.

  • In Prepare, use Download voice while connected if the app says Voice unavailable offline.
  • Microphone audio is used for the current interaction and is not saved as part of a trip or conversation. A transcript you submit may be stored in local conversation history.
  • Text and touch remain the fallback when voice is unavailable or permission is denied.

Do not depend on Hands-Free as your only control path. Locked-iPhone launch, speaker audibility, Bluetooth routing, and voice quality have not completed final physical-device verification for this prototype.

Permissions and Apple Intelligence

  • MicrophoneRequested when you start voice input or Hands-Free. Turn it off to use text and touch only.
  • Speech RecognitionUsed for on-device transcription. Required speech assets may need to download before offline use.
  • Location While UsingRequested only after Use current location. It matches an already saved trip while the app runs; choose a trip directly if you prefer.
  • Apple IntelligenceRequired for conversational interpretation. Manual first-aid topics and saved resources remain available when the model is unavailable.

Review app permissions in Settings → Apps → Offline First Aid. Review Apple Intelligence and language availability in iOS Settings. After changing a setting, return to Offline First Aid and use Retry or Check Again when shown.

Trips, conversations, and local data

Offline First Aid has no FigLantern account or device-to-device library. Prepared trips, readiness confirmations, saved safety packs, app preferences, and conversation history are stored in the app's local container on this iPhone.

  • Use Conversations in Help to reopen local history. Use Delete there to remove a conversation.
  • Open a trip in Prepare and choose Remove from iPhone to remove its preparation state.
  • A shared safety pack cannot be removed while another saved trip depends on it. Remove or change those trips first.
  • Deleting the app removes its active local container. Apple-managed device or iCloud backups may retain an older copy under your backup settings.

Do not delete and reinstall as routine troubleshooting. You can lose trips, conversation history, readiness state, and other local-only information.

Lost Coast tide lookup

For a supported Lost Coast trip with dates, Look up and understand tides opens Tide lookup. The request needs internet access and fetches NOAA predictions for the fixed Shelter Cove station. If it fails, reconnect and try again.

The screen shows daily highs and lows and links to official BLM guidance. It does not build or recommend a crossing plan, and predictions do not account for swell, storms, sneaker waves, creek crossings, your pace, or daylight. Make a separate conservative route plan.

Read NOAA's privacy information for NOAA's handling of normal request details.

Troubleshooting

The conversation model is unavailable

Confirm the iPhone supports Apple Intelligence, Apple Intelligence is on, the current language is supported, and system model downloads have finished. Keep the iPhone on power and Wi-Fi if setup is still completing, then use Retry or Check Again. Quick help and manual topic selection remain available.

A trip still says Needs attention

Open the trip from Upcoming trips. Review Offline details, unresolved source items, navigation and communication confirmations, kit state, and voice setup. While connected, tap Update saved safety.

Voice does not start

Check Microphone and Speech Recognition access, then return to Prepare and use Download voice if shown. Use text and touch if speech remains unavailable.

The wrong saved trip is active

Choose the intended trip directly under Upcoming trips. Location matching is optional and may show no match when access is off or the app cannot associate the current location with saved coverage.

Contact support or report a source issue

Email hello@figlantern.com. Helpful technical details include the app version and build from Settings → Privacy & support, iPhone model, iOS version, visible readiness label, whether the iPhone was connected, and the steps that led to the problem.

For a source correction, include the resource name, freshness label or source identifier if shown, and a public authoritative correction link. A source report is not emergency or professional medical care.

Please do not email an incident description, medical answers, conversation text, microphone audio, transcript, precise location, credentials, passwords, or other sensitive information. We can start with the visible label and a description of the technical problem.
